Step 2: Prepare the Fitting. Once you have measured the pipes, it’s time to prepare the fitting itself. Start by sliding one end of the fitting onto one of the pipes and then threading on one of the nuts until it’s tight against the end of the pipe. Next, slide on a compression ring before repeating this process with the other nut and pipe.. Step 3: Install the Fitting. Slip the compression nut from the compression fitting onto the pipe, then slip on the compression ring. Slide both pieces down so they are 1 inch or so from the end of the pipe. Fit the compression fitting onto the pipe (or fit the pipe into the fitting, as applicable) until the pipe stops inside the fitting.
